Ingredients

  • 1 small head green cabbage (1½ to 2 pounds), cored and thinly sliced
  • 1 pound ground beef (80–90% lean)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter (for greasing)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish.
  2. Prepare the cabbage by removing outer leaves, coring, and thinly slicing.
  3. Spread the cabbage evenly in the bottom of the dish.
  4. In a bowl, mix ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  5. Scatter the seasoned beef over the cabbage in small clumps.
  6. Whisk together tomato sauce and beef broth, then pour evenly over the dish.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes.
  8. Remove foil, sprinkle cheese on top, and bake uncovered for 10–15 minutes.
  9. Optional: Broil for 1–2 minutes for a golden top.
  10. Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving.
