Embrace the warmth and sweetness of a beloved family recipe with these Slow Cooker Golden Syrup Dumplings—a dish that captures the essence of comfort food. Perfect for those chilly evenings or whenever you need a spoonful of nostalgia, this recipe is a heartfelt tribute to the simple yet delicious dessert that has roots in Australia and New Zealand.

Background of Golden Syrup Dumplings

Golden Syrup Dumplings are a sweet testament to the ingenuity of home cooks in the early 1900s. These delightful treats were born from the need to create something delicious from the pantry staples of the time, with golden syrup taking the center stage—a byproduct of the sugar refining process with a rich, smooth, and slightly caramelized flavor.

What You’ll Need:

For the Dumplings:

1½ cups self-rising flour

2 tablespoons softened butter

⅓ cup milk

For the Sauce:

2 cups boiling water

½ cup brown sugar

¾ cup golden syrup

3½ tablespoons melted butter.

Instructions:

Start by sifting the self-rising flour into a large mixing bowl.

Add the softened butter to the bowl with the flour. Using just the tips of your fingers, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Gradually pour in the milk, stirring to combine. Mix until a soft dough forms.

With clean hands, shape the dough into small, even-sized balls—think the size of a classic ping pong ball.

Take your slow cooker and blend together the golden syrup, melted butter, and brown sugar with the boiling water, creating a sweet bath for your dumplings to simmer in.

Carefully lower the dough balls into the slow cooker, immersing them in the syrupy sauce.

Seal the lid of the slow cooker and set it to cook on high for about 1 to 1½ hours. You’ll know it’s done when the dumplings are puffed up and a skewer inserted into one comes out clean.

When it’s time to serve, ladle the dumplings into bowls and make sure to spoon over plenty of that luscious syrup. For the perfect finishing touch, add a generous dollop of cream or a scoop of ice cream.

Dive into this sweet sensation and let each bite transport you back to your grandmother’s kitchen, where love was the secret ingredient that made everything taste better. Enjoy the simple pleasure of a dessert that has brought families together for generations.
