Unveiling a fusion of homemade biscuits, mouth-watering sausage gravy, and a cheesy egg delight, the Biscuits & Gravy Breakfast Casserole is the perfect plate to start your day. With roots in the South, this dish has captured the hearts and appetites of many, making it a breakfast favorite nationwide.

Ingredients:

  • For the Biscuit Layer:
    • 2 cans (16 oz each) of refrigerated biscuits
  • For the Sausage Gravy Layer:
    • 1 pound of ground breakfast sausage
    • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
    • 3 cups of whole milk
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Cheesy Egg Layer:
    • 6 large eggs
    • 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
    • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. For the Biscuit Layer:
    1. Open the refrigerated biscuit cans and cut each biscuit into quarters. Place the biscuit quarters in the greased baking dish, spreading them out evenly.
  3. For the Sausage Gravy Layer:
    1. In a large skillet, cook the ground breakfast sausage over medium-high heat. Break it apart with a spatula as it cooks until it’s browned and cooked through. Remove any excess grease if needed.
    2. Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the cooked sausage and stir well. Cook for another 2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
    3. Gradually pour in the whole milk while stirring continuously. Continue to cook and stir until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble.
    4. Season the sausage gravy with salt and pepper according to your taste. Remove it from the heat.
  4. For the Cheesy Egg Layer:
    1. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and add salt and pepper to taste. Pour this egg mixture evenly over the biscuit layer in the baking dish.
    2. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the egg layer.
  5. Assembly:
    1. Pour the prepared sausage gravy evenly over the cheese and egg layer in the baking dish.
    2. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 30-35 minutes or until the casserole is set, and the top is golden brown.
    3. Once done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  6. Notes:
  7. You can customize this casserole by adding diced vegetables like bell peppers or onions to the sausage gravy for extra flavor.
  8. This dish is quite rich, so it’s perfect for a special breakfast or brunch occasion.
  9. Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven or microwave.
  10. Enjoy your Biscuits & Gravy Breakfast Casserole with your favorite side dishes!
